Be prepared to feast as casinos celebrate Thanksgiving with meals
GULF COAST — Thanksgiving is a holiday known for many things, and let’s face it, one of those things is eating. Although turkey, stuffing and cranberries will always be the center of Thanksgiving dinner, there is no reason pork loin, carved prime rib, shrimp scampi and Jonah snow crab cannot part of the meal.
Thanksgiving is Thursday, Nov. 25, and casinos along the Gulf Coast are celebrating in a gastronomical way. There are fine-dining restaurant specials, like at Palace Casino Resort’s Mignon’s, where reservations are required, and less formal eateries, such as Island View Casino Resort’s C&G Grille, where diners can come when they want. And then there are the buffets. So many buffets serving so many delicious items — good thing you can use as many plates (and forks) as you want. On Thanksgiving, most of the buffets are combining their lunch and dinner selections into one daylong feast.
There will be turkey (roasted, Cajun fried, smoked and free range), and there will be also be potatoes (mashed, sweet, whipped and even potato soup) and dressing (sage, cornbread, seafood and sausagestuffed).
Don’t forget about the casseroles (green bean, squash and sweet potato), the vegetables (Brussels sprouts, green beans, buttered corn, sautéed cabbage and turnip greens), the additional entrees (roast beef, fried chicken, fried shrimp, grilled almon, prime rib of beef and chicken Marsala) and the desserts (pecan pie, pumpkin pie, fruit cobbler, crème brulee, blueberry pie and cherry cheesecake). And all of that is just the tip of the Thanksgiving Day offers.
To find out what your favorite casino is serving on Thanksgiving Thursday, keep reading. But be warned, hunger is sure to present itself. And, oh yeah, elastic-waist pants are suggested.

Tunica Humane Society receives funding from Harrah’s
“This is truly an answer to our prayers,” Sandy Williams, executive director of the Tunica Humane Society, said. “From day one our goal has been to build an indoor shelter. The dogs we are housing at the temporary shelter have endured two winters and two summers in the extreme cold and heat.”
Williams, as well as other volunteers, started in August 2008 raising awareness and holding fundraisers to collect money for a new shelter, but until now, much of the money has gone to basic necessities for the dogs like food and medical care. That’s when Williams and other volunteers turned to Harrah’s Foundation for help.
“The Tunica Humane society, their volunteers, and Sandy Williams have shown great determination and resiliency in the past few years to provide a safe haven for area animals,” said R. Scott Barber, regional president, Harrah’s Mid-South Region. “Without their efforts stray animals of Tunica County would almost certainly face a dismal future which could negatively affect area residents, business operations, and infrastructure. It is our hope that this $200,000 grant provided by the Harrah’s Foundation on behalf of Horseshoe Casino and Hotel Tunica will help build a permanent shelter and lasting foundation for the much needed services and compassion this group and organization provides to our area.”
The shelter will be called the Horseshoe Humane Society Tunica, a gift from Harrah’s Foundation, and the Tunica Humane Society will continue to run the shelter that currently houses 115 dogs.
“Tunica County currently does not have a designated department for Animal Control, so we have been functioning in that role and will continue after the permanent shelter is built,” Williams said.
Earlier this year, the Tunica Humane Society applied for the Pepsi Refresh Project, a grant that the public votes online and decides what groups get $50,000 each. They are still in the running for the funding and currently ranked 41 and need to get to the top 10, so Williams encourages people who are not able to give donations directly, to go online to www.refresheverything.com to vote.
The estimated date to start construction is early 2011. The new address for the permanent shelter will be 4500 Fox Island Road in Tunica County. To find out more information about the Tunica Humane Society, call (662) 363-1625, or visit their website at tunicahumanesociety.com.
The Harrah’s Foundation is a private, 501(c)(3) foundation established to provide financial support to qualified organizations in communities where Harrah’s employees live and work. Established in 2002, the Harrah’s Foundation is funded by Harrah’s Entertainment properties and supports social reinvestment programs by funding eligible 501(c)(3) organizations dedicated to seniors, education and civic programs. Since its formation, the Harrah’s Foundation has committed nearly $63 million to nonprofit organizations throughout the United States.

Domenic C. Mezzetta, 1935-2010
October 17, 1935-October 4, 2010
Domenic Mezzetta, member of the Board of Managers of SW Gaming LLC most recently served as chief executive officer and general manager of Harlow’s Casino Resort in Greenville, Mississippi, recognized as an icon throughout the gaming industry and one of the most respected pioneers, passed away Monday, October 4, 2010.
Domenic‘s extensive contributions to the gaming industry span over a period of four decades; 33 years in an upper management capacity. Mezzetta began his gaming career as a bartender at Harvey’s Hotel Casino Tahoe in 1971 and worked his way up to the director of hotel and a position on the executive board in 1977. In 1982, he was promoted to general manager. This led the way to the position of general manager at both Cactus Pete’s and Horseshoe in Jackpot, Nevada. In 1986, he was the Assistant General Manager of the Stardust in Las Vegas overseeing the construction of the fabulous 32-story hotel tower. In 1992, he relocated to Mississippi to build the Hollywood Casino Tunica from the ground up and successfully opened the $135M showplace in August of 1994. Domenic moved to Fitzgerald’s Casino in 1998, as the vice president and general manager, remaining until 2004 when he decided to pursue another career as a consultant in the gaming industry.
In 2005, Domenic was approached to take his entrepreneurial style and put his long-time industry experience to use as a consultant on a new project from groundbreaking to opening day. The Greenville, MS project required a proven veteran able to put a professional team together to plan and bring it to life. Chief Operating Officer and General Manager Domenic Mezzetta successfully opened Harlow’s Casino Resort in November of 2007. His vast knowledge of gaming construction and operations along with constant vigilance and dedication to the property is considered one of the most important contributions behind the successful story of Harlow’s Casino Resort.
Domenic served on the newly founded Tunica Tourism Commission and was an avid supporter of the Tunica Convention and Business Bureau. He is considered the driving force behind Mississippi legislature passed in 1997 to create a start-up tourism and convention organization in the Mississippi Delta. In May of 2002, Domenic received the honor of being the first inductee into the Tunica Tourism Hall of Fame.
As a concerned citizen and resident of Tunica County, Domenic played an important role in community public relations and was often called upon by the local governing authorities for advice or opinion on major decisions not only affecting the gaming industry and tourism, but also decisions that affect the quality of life for residents.
Domenic is survived by his wife of 39 years, Barbara, six children and twelve grandchildren. His wishes were to have donations made in his memory to “The American Heart Association” and “The Salvation Army. He was an exceptional man that leaves an impact on many lives; family, personal friends, business associates and the gaming industry will miss him greatly.

TUNICA, Miss., May 21, 2010 – Due to recent weather conditions and the sudden volume increase of the Mississippi River the Willows 2010 U.S. Open Sporting Clays Championship will be relocated to approximately 450 acres owned by Harrah’s Entertainment just two miles away from the original location at Willows Sporting Clays and Hunting Center in Tunica, Mississippi. The dates of the 2010 U. S. Open will remain as originally scheduled, June 1 – 6, 2010. Registration will now be located at 1455 Casino Center Drive.
The alternate location is a picturesque plot of land subdivided into multiple shooting course locations by dense foliage very similar to that of Willows Sporting Clays and Hunting Center. The alternate location just happens to be on the other side of the river levy so as not to be affected by the rising Mississippi River.
“Those familiar with Willows Sporting Clays and Hunting Center will notice the similarities in the landscapes and facility offerings, said Barry Kelly, manager, Willows Sporting Clays and Hunting Center. “Those unfamiliar with Willows Sporting Clays and Hunting Center are sure to enjoy the experience the alternate location will offer. We are proud to have been chosen to host this wonderful event and we are dedicated to provide everyone with a great shooting experience regardless of the location.”
After recently touring the alternate location, Robert Crow, director of the National Sporting Clays Association (NSCA), Phil Murray, NSCA executive counsel chairman, and Brent Fleming, NSCA executive counsel member agreed that the alternate location was a more than suitable choice for the event to be held.
“I think they should move Willows here permanently,” said Crow. “The new shooting grounds offer rolling terrain, woods, meadows, and open fields along with ample parking next to the paved four acre vendor area.
The U.S. Open Sporting Clays Championship is the second largest sporting clays event sanctioned by the National Sporting Clays Association. The competition is presented by clay pigeon trap manufacturer, Promatic and is open to the public. Registration forms can be downloaded at Http://www.willowsusopen.com
This is the first year the U.S. Open Sporting Clays Championships will be held in Mississippi. “There are less than 10 clubs that are big enough to host a U.S. Open,” said, Michael Hampton, executive director of National Sporting Clays Association. Willows has been the site of state sporting clays championships for Mississippi, Arkansas, and Tennessee. Willows is located on the Harrah’s Casino property along the Mississippi River in Tunica, Mississippi and encompasses land in both Mississippi and Arkansas.
“We hope to attract 1,000 participants for a total of about 2,000 visitors this year because of our location and offerings,” said Barry Kelly, manager, Willows Sporting Clays and Hunting Center.
Willows is located 30 minutes South of Memphis, Tennessee in Tunica, Mississippi. Tunica is home to nine world-class casinos, 6,000 luxurious hotel rooms, fine dining restaurants and buffets, headline entertainers, championship golf and tennis, award-winning museums, lavish spas, and a variety of shopping options.

'Absolutely' says Kevin Hunter on new Sportsman Casino
Heard it on the River
By Rudi Schiffer
Featured in Jackpot! Magazine
TUNICA RESORTS – Over the years since the Tunica casino complex became entrenched, many wannabe hopefuls have visited and dreamed of their casino sprouting up in the surrounding cotton fields and providing an endless flow of cash for their coffers. The problem was that the cash to open their glitter palaces was not in place and never would be as they sought to build their dreams with other people’s money.
Now comes along some Southern gentlemen who says they are going to build a casino and do it right. But the question still persists; show me the money. Longtime observers here say it’s a another pie in the sky feeler. But there was enough smoke emitting from this fire that called for some critical reporting to see if this latest venture was real or just a developer running around the county with architectural renderings for effect.
I caught up with Kevin Hunter, who in earlier times might have been an aide-de-camp for General Robert E. Lee. He would have filled that role easily with his smooth Southern manners, an erect and correct posture, and an easy friendly manner of talking that makes you a believer from the beginning. During a two-hour conversation on the patio of Tunica National Golf Club, he led me through the process, how and why the development would work, who would make it work and what it does for the County.
But, as he drew me into his dream, I suddenly remembered I was supposed to be uncovering something here, finding out for our readers if this group was real, did it have the money or was it just ego-driven posturing? I asked the burning question:
Can you get the deal done?
“Absolutely” was his firm, unequivocal reply. I asked him again, giving him the opportunity to back off this stance. “Can I quote you on that? Again the same unflinching retort: “Absolutely.”
Since Hunter, a Mississippi native and graduate of the University of Mississippi, was now tied to that position, the next question was how would he and his partners make this work if the money was not a burning issue.
“We have local roots in the region, for one thing, “ said Hunter. “And we agreed it was not good for an empty building to be sitting on “Main Street” of this casino town. A replacement was needed to help bring excitement and revitalization to the jurisdiction.
“Our key investors are from this area so there is more devotion to making this project work, and work right from the beginning. They are really solid people and friends who are doing this for the right reasons.
“We also addressed the timing of this project since the adverse economic conditions seemed against a development of this magnitude. But ultimately we agreed this was the best of times and with the economy on a mild upswing, our timing would appear to be on target.”
“So why the name, Sportsman Casino & Lodge?” Mr. Hunter.
“The genesis of this particular name arises from the region we live in that is big on outdoor pursuits such as hunting, fishing, boating, sporting clays and the like and we feel it is a position that will fit into the casino landscape because it is a name that is memorable, unique.”
The proposed casino, which has Gaming Commission approval for the former Isle of Capri casino site adjacent to Sam’s Town in Casino Strip that includes Hollywood and Resorts, is expected to ground break around September with a target date for completion in late 2011. It won’t be an MGM Grand but an investment around $80 million, a modest endeavor with 1,300 slot machines, some 30-40 table games, several restaurants and 220 new rooms. The gaming floor will be about 50,000 square feet.
While the name of the casino and the theme is still not final, the working name seems like a good one if selected. We didn’t get a peek at any renderings but the project has moved beyond that stage with the retention of well-known Askew Nixon Ferguson Architects of Memphis for the design.
Another critical and key element came with the early decision to retain one of the most well-respected names in the industry, Lakes Entertainment of Minnetonka, Minn. and its CEO, Lyle Berman, who built and operated the Grand Casino, where Harrah’s now sits on the northern border of the county.
“Lyle was a key decision for us, “ Hunter. “He knows this business and I regard him as a renaissance man in the industry. He has our respect and very importantly, the respect of the national gaming industry. Lyle also has local experience… he knows the market…he is the all-important X factor.”
Lakes also has various management, financing and development agreements with five other casinos in three states and will supervise the hiring of some 400-500 employees.
With Berman, Hunter said the people involved in the project present a solid front and working as a well-financed team are now hitting all the benchmarks which up the odds of making Sportsman a reasonably leveraged operation that will do well in the Tunica market.
The team Hunter talks about, besides Berman, include Abston-Mckay Ventures (AMV) of Oxford, Ms, where it is headquartered, and Orr Family Properties, a Tunica-based LLC represented by a well known attorney in these parts, Bobby Leatherman, Jr. who has worked on a number of casino related projects in Tunica over the last several years.
“Similar projects usually start with pretty drawings and grandiose ideas that don’t really have a plan for raising money,“ said Leatherman. “I knew at our first meeting they set up with Orr Family Enterprises that they were serious because they introduced investment banker Bruce Raben as part of their team. Subsequent efforts was to firm up the investment team and a hire Lyle Berman. This is how successful deals like this get put together.”
Hunter is an experienced business principal with extensive entrepreneurial experience in a wide variety of industries such as automotive dealerships, telecommunications, media and professional sports. He is remembered in Memphis as franchise owner of the Memphis Pharaohs of the Arena Football League. A native of Tupelo, he was named by the Mississippi Business Journal to its original list of the Top 40 business individuals under 40. He is now 46.
Norfleet Abston of Memphis is chief financial officer of Old Waverly Investments and later was founding principal and chief financial officer of Sovereign Wealth Management, Inc. A 1983 graduate of the University of Mississippi, where he earned a degree in economics, he obtained his Master’s of Business Education at Vanderbilt. He currently serves on the board of Trustees for Carnival Memphis, the Memphis Zoo (2006) and Boy Scouts of America, Chickasaw Council.
Last but not least is the very important contribution of Bruce Raben of Los Angeles, who brings all the experience in the world to the group. He has been an investment banker, merchant banker and private investor for over 25 years and is a founding partner of Hudson Capital Advisors, LLC. At Drexel Burnham Lambert he worked on many leveraged buyouts and recapitalizations for such companies as Mattel Toys, Warnaco, Mellon Bank and John Fairfax. Raben received his A.B. from Vassar College and his MBA from Columbia.
“With this outstanding team, we feel we are well-positioned, well financed, entrepreneurial-led and will do well in this competitive market where our presence will add to the attraction of Tunica gaming, absolutely,” said Hunter.
